Improved environmental footprint and customer satisfaction? Yes, please! - How to leverage parcel size optimization
Everybody knows this situation: You receive a barely filled parcel and wonder: why was such a big parcel used for the shipment of my product? Our client received several customer complaints about this and decided to take action. A well-known approach focuses on the optimization of the packing process itself (the mathematical 3D bin packing problem) with solutions tailored to all kinds of circumstances. However, changing the packing process is often not practical or limited possible. We explored a new angle: based on historical order data we optimized the size of the parcels available. We managed to increase the average fill rate of the parcels from 57% to 67% by only optimizing parcel dimensions! This way, our client could increase customer satisfaction, decrease waste, improve their environmental footprint, and cut down cost.
